Recommendations: Frigid Weather Horrors!
With a huge snowstorm hitting the midwest (and here in the northeast), it would be appropriate to recommend a few movies that would work well when all is being covered in white outdoors. Some movies work because of the cold and snowy atmosphere, others work because they simply exist as a great movie to enjoy when stuck indoors.
Snowbeast (1977) takes place at a ski resort during prime season, making for a frigid environment when dodging the bigfoot. The Snow Creature (1954) has a similar theme, but without the quaint landscape photography.
Howard Hawkes’ The Thing (aka The Thing From Another World, 1951) and John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982) take place at the North Pole (the 1951 version) and at the South Pole (the 1982 version). Snow storms and landscape shots that cry out for hot chocolate plaster the screen.
One more film where the setting consists of an isolated place surrounded by snow and ice is The Shining (1980). An uninhabited hotel (except for an insane writer and his family) cut off from the rest of the world due to a snowy winter is perfect for a case of cabin fever.
It is going to be a long winter, and having some horror films on hand that heighten the frosty mood definitely would not be a bad thing.
